What is stretch wrap and why do movers use it?
Stretch wrap, also called plastic or protective wrap, is a highly stretchable plastic film, commonly made from linear low-density polyethylene or LLDPE. Beneath the two main types, there are different sub-options in stretch wrap in terms of width, thickness, and even opacity.
The two types of stretch wrap
Stretch wrap, among other stretchable plastic products, is made through a process called “extrusion.” Depending on the process of extrusion, manufacturers can create two types of stretch wrap: cast and blown.
Cast stretch wrap is made through cast extrusion. During this process, polymers are melted and stretched through a flat die onto a chill roll, where it is cooled and re-solidified. Cast stretch wrap is known for being the less expensive of the two options, and is clear, stretches easier, clings tightly and is resistant to tear.
Blown stretch wrap, on the other hand, is made through—you guessed it, blown extrusion. The process involves extruding a tube of melted-down polymers through a slot or vertical die and inflating it to for a film bubble. Blown stretch wrap can handle heavier and larger loads thanks to its increased stretch capacity, and is even more resistant to tear than cast stretch wrap—perfect for clinging to those pieces of furniture with sharper edges.
Top 3 benefits of stretch wrap
1. Stretch wrapping offers superior protection. This is all what most of us are after. There is a significant concern about the safety and security of household items when moving, and stretch wrapping addresses that concern perfectly. A load that is stretch wrapped is protected from dirt, dust, debris, and with increased opacity, can even protect your things from UV rays and theft. Also, loads are carried easier when they’re stretch wrapped. Imagine hauling around five loose boxes as compared to a single huge one.
2. Stretch wrapping is efficient and cost-effective. Stretch wrap is significantly more affordable and requires less effort to apply compared to other unitizing methods.
3. Stretch wrapping can be recycled. Stretch wrap can be recycled if used and repacked correctly, thus overall reducing any waste and trash produced.
We know and understand how big of a decision a move can be to our clients, especially if they’ve settled down for years in a specific area.
